Common questions

How do I open Bob?

Click Bob's icon in Chrome's toolbar and he opens in the side panel. If you don't see the icon, click the puzzle-piece button in the toolbar and pin Bob. Bob needs Chrome 114 or newer.

I installed Bob but nothing happens.

Tabs that were already open when you installed Bob need a refresh before he can watch them. Also check that Pause tracking is switched off: open Bob, go to the Share tab, and look under Settings. Bob can't watch some special pages, such as chrome:// pages and the Chrome Web Store.

What counts as frustration?
  • Rage click: three fast clicks on the same spot, within about a second. It only counts if the page ignored you. If the page responded, or moved to a new address, Bob knows it was working and skips it.
  • Scroll storm: frantic back-and-forth scrolling.
  • Mouse shake: rapid side-to-side or up-and-down movement.
  • Dead click: a rage click where the page did nothing at all. These are counted separately in the Log.

Selecting text and clicking in text boxes never count.

Bob counted something that wasn't frustration.

Very fast clicking in games and unusual pages can sometimes look like a rage click. Bob is a pet, not a lie detector. If it happens a lot on one site, email us the site name and we'll look at it.

How do I look after Bob?
  • Say hi once a day for a big boost to Belly and Joy.
  • Breathe with Bob (a 30-second minigame) up to three times a day.
  • Every 15 quiet minutes of browsing earns a calm veggie.
  • Frustration fills his belly and helps him grow, but it doesn't make him happy, and too much at once gives him a tummy ache.
Can Bob die?

No. If you're away for a few days, Bob curls up into an egg. Press Say hi (or just have a frustrating moment) and he hatches again.

How do the siblings hatch?

Open the Family tab. Each egg shows what it needs and how close you are. Thump hatches after 25 rage clicks, Whirl after 12 scroll storms, Wobble after 12 mouse shakes, Sunny after three days in a row of saying hi, Moss after five calm days in a row, Pebble after ten breathing sessions, and Grandma Grumble when Bob grows into a Gobbler.

Where is my data, and can I erase it?

It is stored on your computer in Chrome's extension storage and is not sent anywhere or synced to other computers. To erase it: open Bob, go to the Share tab, open Settings, and choose Erase all data and start over. Removing the extension also deletes it. See the privacy policy for details.

Why does Bob need access to all websites?

He has to watch clicks, scrolling and mouse movement on the pages you visit to notice frustration. He does not read or save what is on the page. The privacy policy explains exactly what he stores.

Will Bob slow down my browsing?

Bob is designed to be light. He only watches for simple patterns and briefly checks whether a clicked element changed. If you ever notice a slowdown on a specific site, tell us which one.

Bob's diary says it's written from templates.

The diary uses Chrome's built-in on-device AI when your Chrome has it available. If it isn't available, Bob uses built-in templates instead. Both work offline, and neither sends anything anywhere.

How do I rename Bob or turn off the pop-ups?

Open Bob, go to the Share tab, and open Settings. You can change his name, turn the on-page “nom!” pop-ups off, pause tracking, or erase everything.
